The case of Mr. Seong-hyeong Lee demonstrates the effectiveness of the JADAM method, which manages both soil and pests simultaneously by fertigating with JADAM Microorganism Solution (JMS), fish JADAM Liquid Fertilizer (JLF), and wood vinegar. The core of his success lies in improving the soil environment while reducing fertilizer use by cultivating green manure using crop residues and barley. This approach is a prime example of the low-cost, high-efficiency agriculture advocated by JADAM. As a result, he secured both productivity and economic viability, harvesting 300kg (660 lbs) from a 0.12-acre greenhouse.
Before planting peppers in the greenhouse, Mr. Lee applies JMS fertigation 4 times. In addition to JMS, he fertigates with fish JLF and wood vinegar, following a weekly rotation of JMS, fish JLF, JMS, and then wood vinegar. Fish JLF is used to supplement nitrogen, while wood vinegar—harvested from a wood-burning boiler and aged for about 1 year—is applied to provide an effective defense against anthracnose and wilt disease.
After the pepper harvest ends in late September, the residues are left on the ground. Around late October, barley seeds are scattered by hand, followed by a light tilling. After tilling, he simply sprays water once using a sprinkler, and the barley sprouts well and grows without much intervention. In early March, when the barley reaches knee height, he tills it into the soil and adds 40 to 50 bags of organic certified ‘Tokok’ compost to his 0.12-acre greenhouse before tilling again. He relies on the green manure and compost for basal fertilization and does not apply any separate top-dressing, instead meeting the plants' needs through regular fertigation with JMS, fish JLF, and wood vinegar.
The row spacing for the peppers is 1.7m, with 50 to 60cm between plants, allowing for 530 plants in the 0.12-acre greenhouse. Mr. Lee finds pepper farming rewarding as he achieves a yield of 0.6kg (1.3 lbs) per plant—a target many pepper farmers dream of—resulting in a total of 300kg (660 lbs) from his greenhouse.
