The fact that he easily manages culturing JADAM Microorganism Solution (JMS) in two tanks a week outdoors, even in winter, serves as an excellent reference for many farms. However, why did the two culturing tanks show significant difference in speed despite having the same temperature and materials? Based on Mr. Choi’s field experience, this text explores why the continuity of microorganisms is sometimes more powerful than cleanliness when making JMS and reflects on the reliability of the microbial ecosystem that continues to function effectively even after 5 continuous cultures.
Mr. Choi makes two tanks of JMS once a week, doing so outdoors even in the middle of winter. He fills two 500L tanks with water and first heats the water to 35 degrees using an immersion heater. To this, he adds 500g of leaf mold soil, 500g of salt, and 500g of boiled potato starch. He cultures both thanks simultaneously. In a recent instance, after 22 hours, one tank was foaming vigorously and was almost finished, while the other tank was just starting to foam showing a stark contrast in culturing speed. Why is there such a difference in culturing speed under the exact same conditions?
For one tank, Mr. Choi cultured JMS by leaving the leaf mold soil residue from the previous batch in the mesh bag and simply adding more leaf mold soil residue from the previous batch in the mesh bag and simply adding more leaf mold soil, resulting in a much faster and richer culture. He has repeated this process of adding leaf mold soil without washing the bag up to 5 consecutive times, and it consistently cultures richly without any issues.
For the other thank, Mr. Choi cleaned it thoroughly and added a small amount of leftover microbial sediment, but the temperature and time being identical, the culturing speed was noticeably delayed. This practical observation provides valuable insight into the microbial culturing process.
