Beetles belong to the order Coleoptera and are characterized by their hard forewings (elytra) that cover and protect the hindwings. During winter, they overwinter in the soil as larvae, then pupate the following spring and emerge as adults in summer. Depending on the region and climate, they typically produce one to two generations per year.
Their exoskeleton is composed of chitin and proteins bound tightly together, providing protection and preventing water loss. However, this hard shell also reduces the effectiveness of control measures, as pesticides are not easily absorbed and often run off the surface.
Beetles damage a wide range of crops, including fruit trees and field crops. In orchards, they feed on young leaves and fruits, while larvae (grubs) feed on roots in the soil. Root damage leads to wilting and stunted growth, and in some cases, young fruit trees may die. Adult beetles chew on leaves or scar fruit skins, reducing marketability and increasing susceptibility to secondary infections by pathogens. When infestations are severe, foliage loss reduces photosynthesis, resulting in a significant decline in yield.
Beetle larvae spend most of their life cycle underground, which makes control very difficult. Moreover, because their feeding range is extensive, they damage not only fruit trees and field crops but also the roots of wild weeds, causing widespread harm. Adult beetles are nocturnal, hiding in forests or soil during the day and becoming active at night. In addition, they have developed resistance to chemical pesticides, making control efforts largely ineffective. Due to their unique biology and hard exoskeleton, it is challenging to time control measures properly, and even when timed correctly, the effectiveness remains limited.
