Purpose of socks/filter cloth

What is the purpose of putting the potato and leaf mold in a sock, when you use a blender? Should you kneed the content in the socks untill everything is gone, or should you leave some parts left in the socks?

If you use the blender method (finely blend potato, leaf mold, salt with some water) could you just simply put the blended juice in the water barrel without the socks?
