Downy mildew is not caused by a true fungus but by an oomycete pathogen. The disease thrives under conditions where leaves remain wet for extended periods and humidity is high, making it especially prevalent during rainy weather. Symptoms include the appearance of grayish-white or purplish spore layers on the undersides of leaves, while the upper surfaces develop angular yellow spots. As the disease progresses, these areas turn brown and necrotic. Because downy mildew spores are easily dispersed by wind and splashing rain, the infection can spread rapidly, and immediate control measures are essential upon detection. In humid or rainy conditions, preventive sprays must be applied regularly, as the disease becomes very difficult to manage once established.

Downy mildew is especially common in cucurbit crops, including cucumber, melon, watermelon, and squash, but it also affects other crops such as grapes. Its prevalence is a key reason why many growers prefer cultivating these crops in greenhouses rather than in open fields. Greenhouses prevent rain from wetting the leaves, allow better control of irrigation and ventilation, and block the environmental conditions necessary for the disease to develop. Additionally, sprays applied inside greenhouses are not washed off by rain, providing longer-lasting protection. For crops like cucumbers, this makes greenhouse production far more practical and reliable than open-field cultivation.

In Korea, the rainy season often lasts for more than a month, making open-field cucumber cultivation nearly impossible. During the monsoon, even daily spraying cannot keep up with the disease because rain washes off protective residues, and leaves remain continuously wet. This creates ideal conditions for rapid, large-scale outbreaks. As an environmental disease, downy mildew cannot be managed effectively without controlling humidity and leaf wetness—no matter how much pesticide is used, reinfection and spread will continue. In this season, managing diseases is even more critical than controlling insect pests.

For this reason, harvesting open-field cucumbers after the rainy season is almost impossible. Even with excellent insect control, preventing the spread of downy mildew is extremely challenging. JADAM Microbial Pesticide (JMP) mixed with JADAM Sulfur (JS) does not completely prevent downy mildew, but it can significantly slow its spread. In the referenced video, open-field cucumber leaves show almost no signs of downy mildew. Normally, the disease starts on the lower leaves and spreads upward, but in the JADAM farm, the lower leaves remain green and healthy. Even if slight symptoms appear, there is no further spread, which is a clear indicator of successful management. In plant protection, if a disease is halted from spreading after initial symptoms, it can be considered effectively controlled.
