  • Scientific name: Acrolepiopsis sapporensis Matsumura
  • English name: Asiatic onion leaf-miner
  • Size: the body length is 4.5mm and the length of wings are 10 to 12mm
  • Hosts: green onion, garlic, onion, and chives
  • Distribution: Korea, Japan, China, and Siberia

Asiatic onion leaf-miner is 4.5mm in length and a small charcoal gray moth. Its eggs are ivory white and long egg-shape. The egg length is 0.5 mm in diameter. The head of larva is light brown and the body color is green. When the insect becomes an adult, the body length is 7 to 8 mm and the body color is yellow with red striped pattern. The pupa is around 4 to 5 mm. Its body color slowly changes into reddish brown. Moreover, the pupa is inside of a long egg-shaped retiform cocoon which is attached on the surface of a leaf.

 Asiatic onion leaf-miner generally stays over the coldest season as a pupa but some of the winged adults also can. If its growth is processed, there are some cases that can make into allegory during winter. The first generation of adults appears during late June, the second appears in late August, the third is in early October. In October, the generation rate is very high. Moreover, it is common to see in a major producer of green onion.
