Cover crop on fruit trees

I tried growing cover crop on the persimmon tree, the mixture was millet, sunflower and beans. It looked like the side where I planted those sucked all the nutrients out and discoloration of leaves started to happen. The side where I mulched were in good condition do you know why this happened?

    This may happen the first time you try it. As you do it over the years, it gets even better.
